The Devil’s in the Details

Contrary to popular belief the news isn’t just about what you tell people.  Quite often it’s just as much about what you don’t tell people that matters.  As the old saying goes, “The devil’s in the details”.  For example, the media keeps telling us that Republicans have a gender gap amongst women of 12% which gets portrayed as the Right having lost the gender war.  What they don’t report is that 12% actually represents the narrowest this gap has been in decades.  Certainly knowing these particular details paints a completely different picture of where things are heading. The media tells us that the unemployment rate has dropped to 8.2% which is a sure sign of a recovery.  What the media doesn’t tell us is that it isn’t dropping because more people are being employed.  It’s dropping because more people are dropping out of the work force altogether.  Most people would be shocked to know that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the current work force participation rate (number of able bodies available for full time work -versus- number of people actually employed) is at the lowest it’s been in decades at just 63.8%.  So basically more than 1 out of every 3 able bodied Americans lack meaningful employment. The media doesn’t like to bring up the fact that more Americans are on food stamps now than ever before, or that the poverty rate in this country is now at the highest rate it’s been since the great depression, or that 35% of our national debt has occurred since Obama took office.  You also don’t hear about how the CBO has determined that the cost of Obamacare is now projected to be at least double what we were promised, or that under Obamacare Medicare Advantage will be sacrificed by the end of the year in order to help plug a $500 Billion shortfall in the Obamacare budget. You don’t hear any of that.  What you hear instead is that Romney is a wealthy Mormon with bank accounts in theCayman Islands.  Quite frankly I don’t care any more about Romney being a Mormon than I care about whether or not Obama might be a Muslim.  The last I checked there is nothing illegal about holding money in off-shore bank accounts that have been fully disclosed.  What I do care about are the economic realities that we currently live in.  The devil doesn’t try to win you over by telling you how good he is.  He does it by trying to tell you why you shouldn’t trust God.  I’m not trying to claim Romney as some sort of deity.   But what I am saying is that it’s time to stop listening to a media that is simply playing the role of the devil.
